Unsent Letter #17: Spirituality is a Very Simple Thing
September, 2007
Dear Friend
For me, spirituality and religion is a very simple thing because there are only a few points that need to be considered:
1. You are standing/sitting here. The heart is beating and the lungs are breathing. Are you doing that? No. So some power is doing it, animating your body as well as all the billions of other forms. What is that power?
2. In this immense universe, the planets revolve in an orderly way around their suns. There is a power that keeps them in their places. Scientists call that force gravity, saints call it love. That force of mutual, irresistible attraction is upholding everything, from the galaxies to the electrons in the atom. So the nature of the power that pervades the universe is love.
3. What is my relationship with that power? I am here in this body like a tiny wave on the vastness of the ocean. With my limited human intellect, I cannot fathom the depths of the ocean.
4. What can I do? I can realize that my nature as wave is the same as the nature of the ocean.
5. After
realization of my true nature, I am free of the limitations of my wave-nature
because I know that I am nothing but water. However, I still have the form of
a wave and so I still have the same relation to the ocean. Therefore I worship
that power, which is the source of my being, and which is in fact Being itself.
By doing so, I simply reflect back to its source the love that is being extended
to me at every moment.
